Summary[edit]
DescriptionA brief history of Taiwan en.gif |
English: The Qing dynasty had ruled Formosa (aka Taiwan Island) until 1895, when Formosa was ceded to Japan under Treaty of Shimonoseki.
Qing was overthrown in 1911. Its successor, the Republic of China (ROC), was established in 1912. In 1945, Japan lost WWII. Taiwan was handed over to ROC. In 1949, ROC was defeated by communists. The ROC government retreated to Taiwan. The People's Republic of China (PRC) was established by the communists. Today, PRC is commonly referred to as China; ROC is commonly referred to as Taiwan. ROC refers to China for matters before 1949, but to Taiwan after 1949. |
