| Description |
English: A bold statement of ownership, 1960 The ownership of the Shell Haven West refinery was made quite clear to passing river traffic, and indeed those miles away on the Kent side. The refinery cooling water pumphouse at the right is also decorated on a smaller scale. Taken from the seawall, which in those days was a public footpath right round to Shell Haven Creek. Sadly no longer. The waste ground in the foreground used to be the site of the Miners' Safety Explosive Company premises, which produced ammonite (a trade name) on a small scale. Shell never used this area for anything - perhaps a bit nervous of what was left behind. |
