Description |
A bearded man wearing a cloak, head and shoulders portrait (possibly a self-portrait of the artist?). Crayon manner print by Lavalée after J. Gamelin, 1778/1779. Nicholas-Joseph Marcassus, Baron de Puymaurin (1738-1803), to whom this collection of prints is dedicated, was benefactor to the artist, Jacques Gamelin (1738-1803). Puymaurin initially employed Gamelin as a book-keeper in Toulouse, but on noticing his artistic talents, sent him to study with Pierre Rivalz and then the history painter Jean-Baptiste Deshays, in Paris. In the 1760s, Puymaurin's gererosity enabled Gamelin to go to Rome, where he completed his training and was later elected to the Accademia di S. Luca, as a battle painter. Iconographic Collections |
