ate of Yale in 1744, he became erelong one of the leading men of the country. Manyimportant political positions were given to him andhe was one of the three representatives from Con-necticut at the first Continental Congress, held inNew York in 1765. With Roger Sherman and OliverEllsworth, he was appointed a delegate from Con-necticut in 1787 to aid in the great work of framinga constitution for the United States. The same yearhe became the fourth President of Kings College —a position which he filled with great honor until 1800,retiring afterward to his beloved Stratford home. These sketches describe only a few of the eminentmen who came to Stratford when the plantationwas first started or who had their birth in the oldtown and added to her fame. They tell nothing ofthe affection in which her sons and daughters heldOld Stratford, a name by which she was lovinglycalled even when she was as yet quite young. The old Green is still on Watch-house Hill(although some people now call it Academy Hill)and a somewhat newer plot, farther uptown, is yetknown by the old name of Paradise Green. In manyinstances the old families continue to live in the oldhomes.
