is a trip to the navyyard and Friday night the Chinese in the citvare staging a special production: The Yel-low Jacket to which the delegates are admit-ted complimentary. Saturday night there areprize fights and Sunday there are special serv-ices in two of the churches and a football gamein the afternoon for those who care to go. Mon-day free automobiles will carry us out into themountains and show us the heauty heights ofthe country immediately around Honolulu, while earlier in the week we were taken in anautomol)ile trip clear around the island and atthat the half has hardly been told, for we havebeen to a pineapple plantation and cannery, out over a sugar cane plantation and through amill, to say nothing of a special luncheon init onby the Ad Club and a swimming party stagedby the Out-rigger Club. Our readers willreadily note that there are certain expenselessadvantages that go with a trip of this kindthat are not common to one when he tours alone. 168 A TRIP TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS
Text Appearing After Image:
WITH WORLDS PRESS CONGRESS 169 LETTER XXX.Seventeen Varieties Honolulu, October 28, 1921 Last evening- avo heard an illustrated lectureon the active volcanoes on the island of Hawaiiand it filled us so full of lava again that Iwas tempted to write something more about thegreat volcanoes of Manna Loa and Kilauea, butthis morning we went out to visit the peniten-tiary and later on to the Ivalilii Leprosariumand we saw so much of peculiar interest atthese places that this little sketch will be aweak effort to describe something of what wesaw and heard today. At the ))enitentiary we were met by theTTigh Sheriff, Wm. Jarrett, who took us allthrough the institution and explained the sys-tem under which they operate. Their methodof operation is not particularly different fromthat under which many of our state peniten-tiaries are operated, so it is not necessary totouch upon that feature of the work. Theprisoners are housed in a fire proof buildingand the interior showed that it is well kept
