Description
English: This is a Tuck's Oilette painted by Harry Payne for a series depicting Metropolitan and City of London Police. It was first published in August 1911 and I think it may have been painted a few years earlier, the Police Constable is wearing the 1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medal and the 1902 King Edward VII Coronation Medal. King George V was crowned on 22nd June 1911. The number on the PC's helmet is A501 but I can't identify the location on the area covered by Cannon Row, it may be somewhere on Rochester Row's area or perhaps it's just artistic licence. The comment on the reverse of the card is interesting:- "Among the hundred and one duties of the London Policeman he is here depicted as a kindly protector, halting the traffic as he escorts a Lady across the congested streets. This is essentially a London incident, and has no parallel in any other Police Force in the world."
