Description
English: Broken near the hip, but put back together.

Other than the discovery near the Hindu temple, the statue is Hindu (not Buddhist, nor Jain) because (a) he covers his lower body (Digambara Jaina artwork would be nude), (b) he wears the sacred thread across his chest, (c) his arm and ear has Shaiva jewelry. It is likely that he stood before a Shaiva monastery in Kondaparthy, one attached to the Hindu temple there.

This is a piece found near one of the ruined Hindu temples in Kondaparthi village. It illustrates secular-religious sculpture found in historic temples. Such kama, artha, dharma scenes are depicted in different ways in these temples.

The village has its own local museum with some spectacular Hindu and Jain artwork (particularly of Saraswati, Hanuman and Mahavira). Some items such as this one has been moved to other museums.
