Title
A Roman copper alloy nail cleaner with attached copper alloy loop, dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D.
Description
English: An example of a Roman nail copper alloy cleaner that is still attached to a piece of wire that would have held other toilet articles. The nail cleaner does not conform with the three types set out by crummy and Eckhardt but a similar example, 1869 can be found in Crummy (1983; 57 - 58) albeit in a comparitively poor condition. Crummy's example is dated to a mid to late first ceentury type that may survive into the second century. The specimen is very plain and the top third is slightly bent out of shape. It is 58.97mm long, 3.37mm wide and 1.56mm thick. The wire loop to which the nail cleaner is attached is made of copper alloy. It would have also had an ear scoop and tweezers attached. The band is not circular in shape, but more oval and at it's widest it has a diameter of 24.45mm . The ends of the wire are twisted together in order to secure the loop together.
