The principle upon which theso-called combustion, or ratherprevention, of smoke may beeffected is simple. Smokeconsists of vapors produced bythe partial combustion of coal,carrying up small particles offuel in mechanical suspension, and depositing carbonaceous matter in a fine state of di-vision. n The following analysis of gases from chimneys willgive an idea of the composition of smoke produced bythe burning of ordinary bituminous coal under boilers.18 last, however successful or valuable they may be, cannotbe introduced to any great extent, their cost preventingtheir employment in the many small planing and saw-mills whose chief fuel is shaving and wood scraps. /- ■>:./■:/.. It has also been found that carbonic oxideonly exists in black smoke, resulting from imperfectcombustion. The general method of preventing smoke is to effectthe combustion of the carbonaceous matter when thevapors are of a sufficiently elevated temperature to uniteentirely with the oxygen of the air. If the temperaturebe not sufficiently high the hydrogen of the vapors isalone consumed, and the carbon deposited. The gasesproduced by the entire combustion of fuel are colorless,and therefore are not classed as smoke.19 Based upon this idea, we find innumerable patents(over three hundred in number) for consuming smoke.Some introduce
