Description
English: A manuscript map by Philip Durell, surveyed during the War of Jenkins' Ear and the capture of the Portobelo in November 1739. Dated in line with two dates appearing on the map: 1739 for the main map and 1740 for the inset of San Lorenzo Castle.
Includes a key. Includes an inset: "A Plan OF THE RIVER Town and Castle of CHAGRE by Lieut: P. Durell 1740", with a key, in a scale of approximately: 1:4,800 and oriented with South at the top. Includes an inset: "Prospect of Chagre" (San Lorenzo Castle). Includes an inset: "Prospect of Iron Castle" (fort of San Felipe). Includes an inset: "Prospect of Porto Bello Town, Castle Gloria and Fort St: Ieronimo" (Castle of Santiago de la Gloria and San Jerónimo Battery Fort). Includes decorative title vignettes. Includes insets of forts forming part of the defence system built by the Spanish Crown to protect transatlantic trade (World Heritage Centre, Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama: Portobelo-San Lorenzo, available from: http://whc.unesco.org/). Includes towns, ports, harbours, castles, fortification, positions of defences, rivers and landing places. Oriented with North towards the lower left. Paper bears a set of watermarks of a shield with a fleur-de-li surmounted with a crown, with number "4" and letters "LVG" underneath, and "IHS" surmounted with a cross and letters: "IVILLEDARY" underneath. Relief shown pictorially and with soundings.
