Summary[edit]
DescriptionA Pause At Threshing Time, Axum, Ethiopia (3156308439).jpg |
English: The title says it all. Almost.
The title doesn't tell you to look at the upper right corner of the photograph. There you will find one of the most magnificent trees I "saw" in Ethiopia. (I've put "saw" in quotes because I didn't notice the tree until I processed this photo today. This shows once again how easy it is to look without seeing.) There has been much deforestation in Ethiopia. Native species have been replaced by Eucalyptus. I imagine a traveler to Ethiopia in the past (30? 50? 100 years ago?) would have seen more trees like the spreading giant in the upper right. Note: I took this photo from the other side of the viewing stand at the upper end of the so-called "Queen of Sheba's Palace" on the outskirts of Axum. Here's what I was told about the site: it was excavated by a French archaeologist; he never published a report or any findings from his excavation; most, if not all, of the stone walls visible at the site today are reconstructions; there are doubts about the accuracy of the reconstruction. Oops. For these reasons, I took only one photograph the "Queen of Sheba's Palace" site, and I chose not to post it. Fortunately, the area surrounding the site offered interesting scenes such as the one above. |
