Title |
A Medieval Heraldic Pendant |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant with heraldic decoration. It is shaped like a pointed shield with a suspension loop (set at right angles) at the top in the centre. The loop is broken. The front of the pendant was decorated with enamel and gilding, patches of which are still visible. Both the front and back have a light green patina. The heraldic design comprises a red background with three gold lions passant and a blue label (band) at the top. The label has three rectangles (points) hanging down. The heraldic description is: Gules three lions passant guardant in pale or, a label azure. These are the arms of England with a label of France and are those of the earls (and subsequently Dukes) of Lancaster. The back of the pendant is rough but undecorated. Date: Medieval - probably 14th century. Length: 36.9mm; Width: 25.6mm; Thickness: 7mm; Weight: 6.32g. See also Record IDs DOR-DEFB74 and SUSS-8E0011. |
