5 M 5 Q HERALDRY. 177 Amongst ancient shields, some were almost likea horse-shoe (see plate I. Heraldry), otherstriangular, somewhat rounded at the bottom.The people who inhabited Mesopotamia, nowcalled Diarbeck, made use of this sort of shield,which it is thought they had of the Trojans.Sometimes the shield was heptagonal, that is,had seven sides. The first of this shape is saidto have been used by the famous triumvir M.Antony. That of knights banneret was square,like a banner. As to modern escutcheons, thoseof the Italians, particularly of ecclesiastics, aregenerally oval. The English, French, Germans,and other nations, have their escutcheons formeddifferent ways, according to the carvers or pain-ters fancy : see the various examples in theplates.
