Plaets van een afgetekent Kasteel, tot beveiling der Stadt. / O. Schepen, den Portugesen ontnomen. Dr. Olfert Dapper (1636-1689) publiceerde na 1663 een groot aantal boeken. Hij schreef een geschiedenis van de stad Amsterdam en verzorgde de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van Herodotus. Hij is echter vooral bekend vanwege zijn vele beschrijvingen van vreemde landen die hij uit verschillende bronnen samenstelde, zonder dat hij de landen waarover hij schreef ooit zag. Deze afbeelding is afkomstig uit een beschrijving van Afrika. Cf. Nationaal Archief, Den Haag, inv. nr. He wrote a history of the city of Amsterdam and furnished the first Dutch translation of Herodotus. But he is known particularly for his many descriptions of foreign lands which he compiled from various sources, without ever seeing the countries he wrote about for himself.
