Description

1 IX 1939 Niemcy bez wypowiedzenia wojny rozpoczęły działania zbrojne przeciwko Polsce. Z zachodu, północy i południa skierowano na Polskę 1,8 mln żołnierzy, 3 tys. czołgów i 2 tys. samolotów. Armia polska dysponowała 850 tys. ludzi (w pierwszym rzucie), 266 czołgami i 400 samolotami. Przewaga niemiecka była miażdżąca pod każdym względem, zwłaszcza zaś pod względem uzbrojenia i wyposażenia technicznego. Sygnałem do rozpoczęcia działań wojskowych były salwy pancernika “Schleswig-Holstein” na Westerplatte. Atak ów stał się początkiem II wojny światowej, a operacja niemiecka i obrona polska aż do upadku Rzeczypospolitej określana jest w historiografii “kampanią wrześniową”. Niemcy już w pierwszych dniach walki przełamali linię polskiej obrony i zajęli Śląsk, Pomorze i część Wielkopolski. Marszałek Edward Śmigły-Rydz wydał 6 września rozkaz wycofania oddziałów na linię Wisły i Sanu. Stolicę opuścili prezydent i rząd RP. Wojska niemieckie 8 września znalazły się na przedmieściach Warszawy.
