Dans L'Aviation, ses débuts, son développement. De crête à crête, de ville à ville, de continent à continent / [2], Ferdinand Ferber écrit : « On voit également dans [le rapport de Langley, résumé dans L'aérophile de mars 1906, par F. de Rue] que l'aéroplane [de Langley] n'a pu être essayé que deux fois : le 7 octobre 1903, où il a piqué droit dans le Potomac parce que le bout-dehors d'avant qui retenait les haubans avait heurté le plan incliné de lancement ; et deux mois après, à Arsenal-Point à Washington, où il a encore piqué parce que cette fois le bout-dehors arrière avait accroché.
L'aéroplane [de Langley] n'a donc jamais été en liberté dans son élément ; on a cru en Amérique que la machine ne pouvait voler et l'on a refusé des fonds à Langley. On a eu tort, la machine pouvait voler, [...]."
Dans la locution "bout-dehors", il faut sans doute voir les deux mâts que l'on voit sous l'engin et qui servaient de point d'accrochage aux haubans tenant les ailes. Cette image montre effectivement une courbure vers le bas de l'avant du beaupré (le longeron horizontal médian qui prolonge l'engin vers l'avant), comme si le mât avant (ou "bout-dehors), en s'accrochant, avait cassé ce longeron horizontal médian. On note aussi une courbure curieuse du bord de fuite de l'aile avant (qui pourrait être attribuée à la déformation vers l'arrière du mât avant).
