[edit]Description916 Delaware Avenue Apartments, Buffalo, New York - 20210301.jpg |
English: A March 2021 view of the apartment building at 916 Delaware Avenue (corner Bryant Street) in Buffalo, New York. A late-period example of the Italian Renaissance Revival, the building's tan brick façade is accentuated by smoother-textured stone trim fashioned into such Classically-inspired decorative features as paired Doric pilasters flanking the sides of the Delaware Avenue façade as well as demarcating the twin projecting pavilions on the Bryant Street side, a prominent cornice between the fourth and fifth floors, and - on the ground floor - an interesting fenestration pattern of round-arched windows interspersed with baskethandle-arched triple windows, adorned in either case with decorative keystones. The main entrance is framed by rusticated voussoirs arranged in the unusual pattern of a Florentine arch, and guarded by a pair of proud lion sculptures. Permits for the $250,000 construction process - undertaken under the auspices of the "Lasser-Preyer Plan", a vertical integration process innovated by the identically named local real estate investment concern whereby architectural design, construction, property ownership, and building management were all handled by the same corporate entity - were issued by the city in 1927, and by the following spring, advertisements were being run in local papers inviting the public to inspect 2, 3, or 4-bedroom model units with the "definite appeal and homey atmosphere so much desired in apartment homes", each touting amenities such as "Westinghouse electric range, electric refrigeration, dryer, incinerator, receiving room service in basement, locker room, steam heat, hot and cold water, elevator, and janitor service", as well as optional garage accommodations on nearby West Utica Street "at moderate cost". |
