Description/Blazon

  • Shield: Gules, on a saltire Argent two vols conjoined Azure surmounted in fess by a plate charged with a fleur-de-lis of the third and fimbriated of the like.
  • Crest: That for the regiments and battalions of the Alabama Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Gules, a slip of cotton plant with full bursting boll, Proper.
  • Motto: ES HOMMES DE LA TERRE (The Men Of The Earth).

Symbolism

  • Shield: Red and white are used for Engineers.  The field and saltire, in reversed colors, were suggested by the Alabama State flag.  The saltire also is used to represent landing strips and in conjunction with the wings (the blue color alluding to the sky) refers to the nature and mission of the Battalion.  The fleur-de-lis is for combat service in France, World War II.
  • Crest: The crest is that of the Alabama Army National Guard.

Background

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 877th Engineer Aviation Battalion on 14 March 1955.  It was redesignated for the 877th Engineer Battalion and amended to correct the motto on 17 September 1968.
