| Description | 80-G-43831: Mixed landing forces of U.S. Coast Guard and Army Commandos, members of the U.S. Navy’s Greenland’s Patrol Expeditionary Force, search the rugged terrain of Greenland for remnants of a German Naval and Military force which were operating a radio base there. One prisoner was captured, others had evacuated. Shown: The Commandos go over the side of a U.S. Coast Guard Cutter to attack German forces in Greenland. Coast Guardsmen in foreground wear regulation Arctic clothing except for steel helmets. Sailors in foreground receive special training in Arctic landing operations prior to start of expedition. This was the first U.S. Expeditionary Force ever to land and conduct operations against enemy north of the Arctic Circle. Landing operations under cover of darkness were impossible because of perpetual daylight at this season of year. Coast Guardsmen landed with and supported United States troops.
