Summary[edit]

Description 80-G-43480: Captain Walter S. McIhenny, USMC, is shown wearing the Navy Cross awarded to him “for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession.” He organized a volunteer party to advance and evacuate a group of wounded men. Armed with a rifle and under heavy enemy fire, he silenced a machine gun nest and covered the advance and withdrawal of the rescue party. At the time, he was ill and suffering from a high fever. Photograph released October 26, 1943. (8/18/2015).
