Description 80-G-38810: Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr., Commander South Pacific Force is shown presenting awards to (left to right), Commander Laurence A. Abercrombie; Lieutenant R.L. Searles; Lieutenant Junior Grade L.A. Nikoloric. Commander Abercrombie received a Gold Star in lieu of a second Navy Cross for adding in resisting an attack by Japanese torpedo planes on American ships in the Solomon Islands area, February 17, 1943. Lieutenants Searles, Taylor, Nikoloric commanded motor torpedo boats in different attacks upon enemy ships. Photograph released April 1943. U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/03/08).
