Summary[edit]

Description 80-G-17223: Awards: Navy Cross. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz presents awards onboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) at Pearl Harbor, October 15, 1942. Chief Machinist William Arnold Smith, USN, (pictured after becoming Lieutenant Junior Grades), receives the Navy Cross. Smith receives his citation for having volunteered to rectify damage to his ship and for having made his way through the heat and smoke (though twice slipping into unconsciousness to complete the action). This award was for service during the Guadalcanal Campaign, August 24, 1942. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2017/11/22).
