February 2, 1971 Honorable Allen J. Ellender United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 My dear Senator Ellender: I believe I have good news for you Senator Ellender. Our Gettysburg Monument Consultant, Miss Angela Gregory, 630 Pine St., New Orleans, called me by telephone to tell me the following: “It seems that sculptor Donald DeLue, 83 Highland Avenue, Leonardo, New Jersey, who is doing the magnificent Louisiana monument, wrote to Miss Gregory telling her that there is a new Superintendent now at the Gettysburg National Military Park whose name is Mr. Jerry Schober who replaced Mr. George F. Emery, who has retired. “Other news of comparable importance is the news given by Mr. DeLue that Mr. Schober told Mr. DeLue that the land area adjacent to the site on which our monument will be erected has been purchased by a private individual or individuals who contemplate making a gift of the land area to the Gettysburg National Military Park. It seems that no one had been told who the private individuals are, so I am asking you please to look into this and see if this good news is really true.” I feel sure that the work done by you, Senator Ellender, now President pro tempere [sic] of the Senate and the Chairman of the highly influential Appropriations Committee --- and the splendid work done by Senator Russell B. Long and the other congressmen have worked wonders for us. We are highly enthusiastic about this change in Superintendents and we believe that Mr. Schober will be more effective in his assistance to us. I am writing to Mr. Schober today and must confess that I am not quite sure the spelling of his name is correct, however, I could not wait longer to ask his opinions on things we must know as early as possible.
