Summary[edit]

Description
English: 70-class No. 73 at Waterside
70-class power-car No. 73 "River Roe" is at the arrivals platform with a passenger service from Belfast (York Road). For some reason, the 70-class were very prone to swipe damage at the cab sides, which sometimes resulted in this very patched appearance. Martin Baumann has commented: "The damage was probably caused by hitting level crossing gates which the crossing keeper had left across the track for whatever reason, this was fairly frequent around that time. The vehicle behind 73 appears to be a driving trailer so perhaps 73 will be detached for a later goods train. A 70 power car was usually kept at Waterside on its own, facing away from Belfast, and was used for shunting during the day. In the evening the Belfast end power car was detached from a passenger set and the pair worked the goods to Lisburn and back. The "shunting car" as it was known was sometimes changed on a Sunday morning which resulted in a 6 car 70 class set with 3 working power cars".
