White paper with typed black text and a handwritten signature

January 4, 1985 Dear Superintendent Earnst: I am writing this letter on the last day of my eight years as Governor of North Carolina. I regret that I cannot take part in your January 23, 1985, ceremonies to promote donations to Gettysburg National Military Park; but I want you to have this letter of support from me. Over the years, the State of North Carolina has had a tradition of preserving our state’s heritage-from the restorations of Thomas Wolfe Memorial, our State Capitol, and Old Salem to the dramatic presentations on our state's history at Tyron Palace in New Bern. It is altogether fitting that we also extend this tradition of preservation to the heroic deeds of the North Carolinians who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. It is with pleasure that I send my greetings to be read during the ceremony when you will be receiving a check from the State of North Carolina in the amount of $10,000 for the conservation of the North Carolina Monument at Gettysburg. North Carolina is proud to share in the preservation of our nation's heritage at Gettysburg National Military Park and I am pleased that this commitment of funds was made during my administration. We are pleased to have made this contribution and feel that it is the responsibility of all citizens of this country to preserve those places and events which have had such an influence on our lives. I hope that other states will join with North Carolina in the preservation of the markers and monuments at Gettysburg, and we encourage all Americans to participate in the donation program at Gettysburg. Sincerely, John B Hunt Mr. John R. Earnst, Superintendent Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325
