Summary[edit]
Description6-8 Martello Terrace, Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) - geograph.org.uk - 947462.jpg |
English: 6-8 Martello Terrace, Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) In about 1865 Richard Mayne of 896950 and his wife Louisa Coote chose this house by the sea to retire to. Richard, the oldest of nine surviving Mayne children born at 899866, had been a successful land agent in the north. He had also become widely known for his generosity towards his tenants during the awful famine of the 1840s. When on one estate twenty families (77 souls) were unable to pay their rents, "he forgave them every penny of arrears, clothed them, paid their passage to America and fed them during the voyage".
His wife Louisa was the eldest daughter of Charles Coote of Bellamont Forest, Cootehill https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2_ZstVBZSfIC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA114#v=onepage&q=&f=true . The Coote family, wealthy landowners, might be described as eccentric - even by the standards of the Irish ascendancy of those times. For instance Louisa's Coote grandfather was said to have been: "A somewhat absurd figure, ultra sophisticated and ardently Francophile, he insisted on making his maiden speech in the Irish House of Lords in French. Pompous and an inveterate womaniser"! Richard Mayne died at this terrace house in 1876 aged 76, and Louisa two years later aged 65. |
