Title |
5 Roman glass beads |
||
Description |
English: 5 glass beads found at Linton, Trip Lane. Although they were found in the same area, they were not necessarily associated. They vary in colour, but it is likely they are contemporary to one another. Beads can date from the Iron Age to the post medieval period, but are most frequently found in Roman and Early Medieval contexts. These are probably of Roman date, based on other finds from the area and the closest recorded parallels.
Bead 1: A segmented glass bead, light sky blue in colour. The bead is small, with a length of 8.18mm, a width of 6.74mm, a central hole measuring 1.93mm, and weighing 0.42 grams. A parallel to this from the PAS database is record WAW-B7A382. Bead 2: A complete glass bead, bright mid to dark blue in colour. It has slightly flattened ends with a fairly large hole running through it measuring 3.05mm. The bead itself is 9.05mm long, 6.69mm wide and 0.67 grams. A Roman date is suggested for this, with a PAS database parallel (WAW-79AC98). Bead 3: A complete white-cream glass bead. It has slightly flattened ends and is in good condition. The hole is 3mm in diameter, with the whole bead measuring 9.86mm long, 7.25mm wide and weighing 0.87 grams. Bead 4: A complete translucent dark blue glass bead. The bead is fairly well rounded but appears flattened towards the perforations. Length is 8.24mm, width is 7.72mm and the hole diameter is 1.90mm. The bead weighs 0.71 grams and can be paralleled by WAW-79AC98. Bead 5: A complete medium-sized sky blue glass bead. Completely rounded with faint concentric rings running parallel with, and between the perimeter of the holes. It has a proportionately small hole measuring 2.23mm, compared to its overall size of 12.98mm long, 11.15mm wide and a weight of 2.5 grams. Parallels are known from the PAS record BERK-793E02 probably dating it to the Roman period (AD43-410). |
