Title |
5; Medieval harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy shield shaped harness pendant dating from the Medieval period. The design on the front is made up of 5 horizontal stripes of different thicknesses; two narrow above one wider, then two narrow below. Traces of red enamel still survive. A suspension loop is located on the top side of the shield. It has a dark brown patina. Any treaces of gilding or silvering do not survive, and there may have been further charges on the central fess, but it is possible that the blazon refers to Bartholomew, 1st Lord Badlesmere whose arms may be described as: Argent, a fesse between two bars gemelles gules (homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com). The shield may also be associated with the Bary family (http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/barry-family-crest.htm). The pendant has a length of 44.30mm, width 26.68mm, thickness 2.61mm, weight 11.49g. For reference see P and E Saunders 1991. Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue part 1 pgs. 24-25. |
