Description |
English: White paper with typed black text DETAILED BREAKDOWN OF THE ABOVE FOUR SUBJECTS: (1) The consultant viewed and inspected and studied and discussed [sic] in detail the scale model enlarged to 1/3rd (third) the final size of the monument. This model was enlarged from the smaller model which was accepted by the Commission October 1968 when Donald De Lue, sculptor was awarded the commission. In the process of enlarging one scale model to another, many technical problems arise. In this case it is important to study closely the relationship and proportions of the figure, namely the horizontal recumbent figure of the Louisiana soldier and the vertical symbolic female figure. The technical handling of this problem was found to be particularly successful by the consultant. The sculptor showed the consultant the actual measurements of this scale model and the final measurements of the bronze and granite monument were noted. For instance, this 1/3rd size scale modem measures approximately 7’ (seven feet) from the base of the granite pedestal to the top of the flame held by the symbolic female figure. This means that the final clay model will measure approximately 21’ (twenty-one feet) plus. The granite base will measure in the final model approximately 3’ (three feet) from the ground to the level on which the bronze figure of the soldier will lie. In the final model, the female figure will measure approximately 10’-6” (ten feet, six inches) and the soldier approximately 8’ (eight fee), overall 9’ (nine feet). The laurel tree was increased 1’ (one foot) at this scale and the trunks straightened. By raising the grade, the whole monument would be 1’ (one foot) above the level of the ground on site and the overall measurement of the monument would be approximately 22’ (twenty two feet.) The sculptor has of course taken into consideration the usual amount allowed for shrinkage of the bronze castings. SUMMARY: All measurement and all details of technical procedure were discussed and checked by the sculptor and consultant. They also checked their individual contacts in order to insure covering all points for which each was responsible. The sculptor has complied with the requests for the removal of the ramrod from the recumbent figure as made by Mr. Emery, Superintendent of the Gettysburg National Military Park at the time the model was approved. The request for this minor change was outlined in a letter to Mrs. Letteer, Chairman, dated Dec. 19, 1968 and another dated Jan.
