January 22, 1927 Subject: Proposed site for monument. To: The Quartermaster General, U. S. A. Sir: A committee from the State of North Carolina, appointed presumably by the Governor of the State, visited the Gettysburg National Military Park for the purpose of seeing the work that has been done in establishing the Park by restoring the original features of the battlefield and marking the positions of the troops; also to get information in regard to selecting a site for a monument to be prepared and erected by the State of North Carolina, to North Carolina troops engaged in the battle of Gettysburg. The committee was constituted as follows:- General A. H. Boyton and Haltes [sic] Murphy, Speaker of the House of Representatives of North Carolina. Theyy arrived at Gettysburg on September 29th, 1926,* and were met by the Assistant Superintendent and conducted over parts of the field and selected a site on [the] east side of East Confederate Avenue an approximate distance along that avenue southerly 2000 feet from Early’s Division Marker at the edge of Gettysburg. Respectfully, E. B. Cope Superintendent.
