Description Postcard postmarked 1904 showing the third Herne Bay Pier which was built 1899. Hoys (small boats), which the pier originally replaced for transferring passengers from steamers, are drawn up on the beach. The resort was known for its attraction for nannies and children at that time, and advertised itself in that respect. In the foreground there is a group of three people who could be a nanny with children. However nannies tended to wear uniform, and the woman could be a wife whose husband was in the Ship (pub). Right up to the 1950s, Herne Bay beaches in summer would be full of women and children, and the pubs along the sea front would contain quite a few of the men. The old London Bridge stone balustrading can be seen at the pier entrance, behind the theatre. This had stood at the entrance to the pier, surviving various rebuilds, from 1831 when the bridge was demolished. It was removed from the pier entrance in 1953 after storm damage, and its present whereabouts is unknown.
