English: U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Todd Winters (center) looks on as Col. Eric Schnitzer (left), commander of the 3rd Expeditionary Air Support Operations Group, hands the 3rd Expeditionary Weather Squadron guidon to Lt. Col. John Hennessey during an assumption of command ceremony on June 3, 2007. Lt. Col. Hennessey, who reigns from Fairfax, Va., assumes command of the squadron which officially stood up on May 31, 2007. Headquartered on Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq, the squadron provides battlefield weathermen to 13 locations throughout Iraq. The 3rd Weather Squadron is based in Ft. Hood,Texas. It is one of three weather squadrons originally formed in WWII. This is the first time that the 3rd will serve in a combat arena. Air Force weather squadrons provide weather support to all Army operations. Battlefield weathermen provide critical, on-the-spot, information to ground commanders during all manner of operations and are considered a critical asset for situational awareness during battlefield planning and execution.
