| Description |
English: Rogue waves (freak waves, killer waves) - single waves of extraordinary height, occasionally appearing in open ocean among the usual ocean "swell". The emergence of such waves apparently associated with processes that can only be described by nonlinear models. In order to construct a rogue wave model it is natural to use nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), that describes the propagation of waves in deep water. Solitary solutions of this equation are called solitons. The picture in the form of an animated wire-frame model shows the interaction of two solitons - solutions of the NLSE one of which catches up another one, resulting in a very high wave (indicated with pause). Such model may explain the fact that rogue waves are not often watched because they do not last a long time
Українська: Хвилі-вбивці - поодинокі хвилі незвичайної висоти, що зрідка з'являються у відкритому океані серед звичайних океанськіх "брижів". Виникнення таких хвиль, напевно, пов'язано з процесами, які можна описати лише нелінійними моделями. Для побудови моделі хвилі-вбивци природно використовувати нелінійне рівняння Шредінгера, яке описує розповсюдження хвиль у глибокій воді. Поодинокі рішення нелінійного рівняння Шредінгера називаються солітонами. На малюнку у вигляді анімованої каркасної моделі зображено взаємодію двох солітонів-рішень нелінійного рівняння Шредінгера, один з яких наздоганяє інший, і звичайних "брижів", внаслідок чого на короткий час утворюється дуже висока хвиля (виділено паузою). Така модель може пояснювати той факт, що хвилі-вбивці можна спостерігати не часто, оскільки вони існують недовго
