assault through the Devil’s Den and up the rocky sides of Little Round Top.” It was exactly the right spot, a perfect location, for this beautiful monument to some brave men whom the people of Arkansas revere, and have sought for years to properly commemorate. Through all the preliminary work on the monument itself, the landscaping of the area, the preparations for the dedication, the publicity for the event, we have had the full cooperation of Superintendent Emery and his staff… more often than not without even asking for it. They did not overlook a thing, even to the removal of a tree that might have detracted from the grace of our monument, to the sodding of the area around it and seeing to it that there were plenty of chairs for everybody attending this ceremony, and a lectern, platform and loudspeaker. On the day of the dedication itself they met the helicopters coming in from Washington and the Army War College, saw to it that the military units were at the right place and right time, controlled the traffic through the park, and personally welcomed everybody who attended… and there were more people than they had expected. Mr. Birdsell had even arranged a list of distinguished guests so that the Master of Ceremonies, Col. John R. Elting, the distinguished historian, from West Point, would have no trouble introducing them. I hope, sir, that you will find it possible to pass along to these men my personal thanks, and those of the people of Arkansas, for going for out of their way to make this occasion the outstanding successful that it was. Sincerely, Neill Bohlinger, Chairman Arkansas Gettysburg Memorial Commission
