Summary[edit]

Description
English: 330-PS-9263 (USN 710306): USS Glacier (AGB 4) breaks through 600 miles of ice to reach Antarctic. The U.S. Navy icebreaker USS Glacier, spearhead of Operation Deepfreeze IV, arrived at McMurdo Station in the Antarctic on 16 November, after eight days of breaking through 600 miles of ice. At the time, she was the world’s largest and most powerful icebreaker to penetrate the seven to ten foot thick dry ice blocking the entrance to McMurdo. After carving a five-mile channel into McMurdo, USS Glacier entered an off-loading site for the larger ships which will unload later this month, 11 November 1958. This specific photograph shows fuel being loaded off onto the Seabee’s Sno-Sleds at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. (10/28/2014).
