Summary[edit]
Description330-PSA-289-61 (USN 710993) (21810725566).jpg | 330-PSA-289-61 (USN 710993): Three Naval Aviators were presented Distinguished Flying Crosses by Chief of Naval Operations Admiral George W. Anderson, USN, (right), in Pentagon ceremonies. Here the pilots hold models of the two aircraft they recently flew to set new records. The pilots are (left to right) Captain Bruce K. Lloyd, USN, Commander E. J. (Jack) Roulstone, USN, and Commander George William Ellis, USN. Commander Ellis holds a model of an F4H “Phantom II” in which he set a new class record December 5, 1961, of 66,443.8 feet for sustained altitude in horizontal flight. Captain Lloyd and Commander Roulstone hold a model of the HSS-2 helicopter in which they set three world speed records on December 1: 182.8 miles an hour for 100 kilometers; 179.5 miles an hour for 500 kilometers, and 175.3 miles an hour for 1000 kilometers. The Phantom II is the U.S. Navy’s newest and fastest all-weather fleet fighter and the HSS-2 is an important part of the Navy’s Anti-Submarine Weapons System. Photograph released December 13, 1961.
