Description

White paper with typed black text and a handwritten signature

UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum TO : Superintendent DATE: July 20, 1971 FROM : Chief of Resources SUBJECT: Mississippi Monument A few comments and recommendations: 1. Recommend that the key word “Mississippi” be the heading on a line by itself. 2. Recommend that the first line of the text be changed to: “On hits ground the brave sons of Mississippi fought for their cause;” or “On this ground our brave Mississippians fought for the cause they believed to be right;” or “On this ground the brave sons of Mississippi fought for a cause they believed in;” 3. It will be noted from the attached extractions that none of the other Southern monuments have a sentence comparable to that proposed by the Mississippi Commission. 4. The plot plan should be reviewed in light of the discussion on the ground relative to the monument’s location. The plan has the site closer to the road than that of Louisiana. 5. The plan has the walls the walls 4’ or less in width. Louisiana’s walls are 6’ wide. The ones for Mississippi should be the same. 6. The plan calls for soil-cement walls; they should be of material in keeping with the monument, e.g., flag-stone. 7. The overall height of the Mississippi Monument will be 15’-16’; Louisiana’s is 21’ in height. 8. The landscaping probably will be about $800.00. This was the approximate cost for the Louisiana job. 9. Recommend an effort be made to get the Reaver property before the dedication.
