Summary[edit]
Description28 St Stephen's Green North, Dublin - geograph.org.uk - 943640.jpg |
English: 28 St Stephen's Green North, Dublin This is now part of the Shelbourne Hotel, but in the early 19th century it was the entrance to the home of Judge Edward Mayne 1756-1829 of the King's Bench, a member of a large family from Cootehill, County Monaghan 899866. His example resulted in the Mayne name figuring heavily in lists of Dublin lawyers throughout that century. One of them, Edward's son, the barrister Sir Richard Mayne 1796-1868, became the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police on its formation in 1829 - a job he held until his death nearly forty years later. His bio https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=2_ZstVBZSfIC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA126#v=onepage&q=&f=true
Judge Edward Mayne was described as being of "the sapient, soft and melancholy strain", yet the sentences he passed in 1815 (listed at The Old Court House, Downpatrick Museum) included quite a few death sentences - one for stealing a horse. He took no part in politics and resigned in 1820. |
