Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania June 10, 1963 Memorandum To: Regional Director, Northeast Region From: Superintendent, Gettysburg Subject: Florida Memorial For the past ten days, there has been a succession of letters, wires, and phone calls from persons working for the erection of a Florida monument on the battlefield. Their effort started all too late, but they are determined to have the monument finished for dedication on July 1. Today the last details of the proposal have been furnished to me, and I am forwarding the plans and text sheets to you for consideration. I feel that the text should not be approved in its present form, inasmuch as it violates the policy of “no praise” rather flagrantly. The design and siting of the memorial itself seem good and have my recommendation. From letters received, I understand that the Florida committee has intended to talk to members of the Florida congressional delegation about expediting approval of their plans at the Washington level. I have just had a telephone call from Dr. F. Walter Coleman saying that he has indeed been contacted by a Florida congressman, asking about progress. I told Dr. Coleman that the plans would be rushed to your office with a request that they be forwarded to WASO promptly. This matter was the subject of a call to Assistant Regional Director Crouch at 1:30 today. Kittridge A. Wing Superintendent
