El río Mandeo es un río europeo del noroeste de la península Ibérica que desemboca en el Océano Atlántico. Río gallego que atraviesa la provincia de La Coruña, en el noroeste de España. Destaca por su riqueza piscícola, con importantes cotos de pesca de salmón y trucha; y por la celebración a sus orillas de la Romaría dos Caneiros, la mayor romería profana de Galicia. La existencia de numerosas centrales hidroeléctricas en su cauce ha provocado, en los últimos años, una fuerte polémica, por la supuesta peligrosidad de los cambios repentinos de caudal que conlleva su funcionamiento. Nacimiento: en el lugar de Marco das Pías, en el municipio coruñés de Sobrado dos Monxes (Sobrado dos Monxes, en gallego), a unos 700 metros de altitud. Curso: recorre los municipios de Sobrado dos Monxes, Aranga, Curtis, Irixoa, Coirós, Paderne y Betanzos, con una longitud total de 56 Km. Es el segundo río en importancia de las Rías Altas, por detrás del Eume. Desembocadura: en la ciudad de Betanzos, donde se une con el río Mendo para formar la Ría de Betanzos. Afluentes: los principales son los ríos Deo y Zarzo, destacando también los arroyos (regos, en gallego) de Cambás y Mollopán.
Esta romería fluvial tiene lugar los días 18 y 25 de Agosto, en el río Mandeo de la ciudad de Betanzos como parte del programa de las fiestas de San Roque. Se tienen noticias de la celebración en la prensa diaria del siglo XIX. En sus orígenes, los brigantinos, después de los tres días "grandes" de las fiestas de San Roque, y después de haber elevado el globo de papel más grande del mundo, acudían en barco a un campo situado a las orillas del Mandeo para pasar una tarde de merienda al son de las gaitas. |
