| Description |
The Spieth & Krug Brewery Building (242 E. Main Street), in Bozeman, Montana. Also known as the "Maxey Block", Bozeman’s first brewery was founded on this spot in 1867 by Jacob Spieth and Charles Krug. Sour Dough Creek ran along the site, which gave them clear, ice-cold water for their beer. Their original frame building was demolished in 1882, and an Italianate structure featuring round-arched and windows and an ornate iron cornice built from 1882 to 1883. The railroad had just come to town, and building supplies were scarce. So two different suppliers were used -- which left the first floor in dark brick, and the second floor in light brick. The front half of the first floor was an ice house, and the rear was a brewery and grain storage and washing facility. The second floor was a banquet and social hall. The brewery closed in 1895, and Daniel Maxey purchased and remodeled it. The Bozeman Trades and Labor Council, AFL, purchased it in 1945. The second floor, which had been shuttered for years, was turned into a new union meeting hall. The ground floor began to be used as restaurant space in the 1980s, and continues to be used so today. |
