Description
English:

Black and white image of large white house, with shrubs surrounding it, bare trees as well. A fall/ winter photograph.

Originally built by local businessman George Porterfield Gates and finished in 1885, 219 North Delaware Street was one of the most fashionable homes in Independence. For eight years, 1945-1953, it was a set of power, and known as the "Summer White House." One of it's occupants was President Harry S Truman, although he didn't own it. His mother in law did! Harry and Bess Wallace Truman bought the home in their name in 1953, after his presidency.
