Summary
[edit]Description2021 John Carter House, 21 Meeting Street, Providence.jpg |
English: The John Carter House at 21 Meeting Street in Providence, Rhode Island, also known as "Shakespeare's Head", was built in 1772 by Carter to house the presses of the Providence Gazette he published, a bookstore, a post office, and his large family. It is one of the oldest thre-story buildings in the city. The name "Shakespeare's Head" comes from the bust of the Bard on the sign outside the building. To prevent its demolition, the building was acquired by the Shakespeare's Head Association in the late 1930s, which renovated and restored it and installed the Colonial Revival-style gardens in the rear, which are open to the public. It is currently occupied by the Junior League Association and the Providence Preservation Society, the constituents of the Association. (Sources: Guide to Providence Architecture, sign on site) |
