Summary[edit]

Description
English: Autumn colors in the Japanese Garden, Moscow. In the foreground is sakura (prunus sargentii) in bright autumn colors. In the background is a 13-tiered stone pagoda (17th century, brought from Japan specifically for arranging a garden in Moscow). The sakura foliage, which quickly changes color and flies around, and the pagoda, which does not change at all seasons, symbolize the contrast between the fickle and the eternal. Such Pagodas in a Japanese garden are the compositional and semantic center of the garden. The Japanese Garden is located on the territory of the Main Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences. It was opened in 1987 and is a gift from the Government of Japan to the Government of the USSR. This Japanese Garden is the only Japanese garden in Russia created by Japanese landscape architects and gardeners.
