English: Looking north at the Montgomery Ward Building (201 East Main), in Bozeman, Montana.
This building was built in 1928 by the Montgomery Ward Company and designed by omnipresent local architect Fred Willson. It replaced the old Laclede Hotel, built in 1864. Montgomery Ward occupied the structure until the 1990s. After it shuttered its operations, the building housed a clothier and then furniture store, before becoming home to the Rocky Mountain Rug Gallery. Shortly after 8:30 AM on March 5, 2009, a gas main explosion and fire at 219 East Main (the Joyce Theatre building, which housed the Montana Trails Gallery) destroyed five historic buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East Main Street in Bozeman. The building adjacent to the Montgomery Ward Building was destroyed. The Montgomery Ward Building was damaged by fire, but was quickly renovated. Rocky Mountain Rug Gallery reopened in 2011. Although the structure is located within the Main Street Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is not a contributing structure. |
