Comparing [[w:Warming stripes]] derived from two different datasets (HadCRUT 4.6.0.0 and Berkeley Earth) each having a reference period 1961-1990 whose average temperature determines boundary between blue and red.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Comparing w:Warming stripes derived from two different datasets (HadCRUT 4.6.0.0 and Berkeley Earth) each having a reference period 1961-1990 whose average temperature determines boundary between blue and red. Each hue covers a temperature range of 0.1 degrees Celsius. Overall date range is 1850-2018. Data is for globe (not a locality).

The HadCRUT dataset publication specified the 1961-1990 reference period, so no changes were necessary. The source data for the HadCRUT graphic is provided on the Wikimedia page of its graphic, which is provided below.

I started with the Berkeley Earth dataset that was published with a 1951-1980 reference period, and subtracted the difference between the average temperatures of the two time periods, to arrive at a dataset having a resulting reference period of 1961-1990. Following is the dataset I derived from the original Berkeley Earth dataset as described above:

General notes:

  • Credit for general concept of w:warming stripes: climate scientist Ed Hawkins, w:University of Reading, U.K.
  • Data values are visualized using color rather than locations of points on a graph.
  • The average temperature in reference period 1961-1990 determines boundary between blue and red.
  • Horizontal scale is time, from 1850 (left) to 2018 (right).
  • Each hue (up to 8 blue and 8 red) covers a temperature range of 0.1 degrees Celsius.
  • Data is global (not for a locality).
  • A thin purple horizontal bar (purposely designed to be visually discreet) shows the reference period for the diagrams
