Comparison of [[w:Warming stripes]] using two different locations, two different datasets, testing type (and different color schemes)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Comparison of w:Warming stripes using two different locations, two different datasets (and different color schemes), testing type, reference temperature (determining boundary between blue and red stripes) is unspecified.
  • Top panel: w:Azores, GISTEMP/250 dataset (NASA), date range 1880-2017, testing air temperatures only
  • Bottom panel: entire planet, w:Berkeley Earth dataset, date range 1850-2018, reference temperature (determining boundary between blue and red stripes) is the average of temperatures for 1951-1980, testing land and sea temperatures
  • The two graphics use different color arrays since they were created by different uploaders
  • Color scheme of blues in top panel have been adjusted brighter to make a more meaningful comparison with color choice of bottom panel
  • Important: A hue in one diagram does not necessarily represent the same the temperature range as a similar hue in the other diagram
  • Panels are vertically aligned to enable year-by-year comparison

General notes:

  • Credit for general concept of w:warming stripes: climate scientist Ed Hawkins, w:University of Reading, U.K.
  • Data values are visualized using color rather than locations of points on a graph.
  • The average temperature in reference period 1961-1990 determines boundary between blue and red in the bottom panel (Berkeley Earth). Azores graphic's reference period is unknown.
  • Horizontal scale is time, from 1850 (left) to 2018 (right) for the bottom (Berkeley Earth) panel.
  • Each hue (up to 8 blue and 8 red) covers a temperature range of 0.1 degrees Celsius in the bottom (Berkeley Earth) graphic.
