Summary[edit]

Description
English: A July 2015 cruise through Lake Huron within the Fathom Five National Marine Park in Ontario, Canada, destination: Flowerpot Island. Fathom Five was established by Parks Canada in 1987 as the first of what are now four National Marine Conservation Areas of Canada. This 44-square-mile expanse of Lake Huron serves to protect not only a delicate marine ecosystem that includes several rare species of orchid and fern, but also a unique landscape of dolomite rock eroded into sea stacks popularly known as "flowerpots" (most of which are located on the aforementioned identically named island), as well as an array of nearly two dozen shipwrecks that make the park one of the world's topmost attractions for freshwater divers. Today there are two private boat companies offering cruises to Flowerpot Island. This photo was taken from aboard the Tobermory Frontier, the smaller, newer, and less expensive of the two operations, run since 2011 by Bruce Anchor Cruises. The boat seen in the distance is the Great Blue Heron, one of several boats belonging to Blue Heron Cruises, in existence since the 1960s. A third tour boat, the True North II, sank during a windstorm in June 2000, killing two of the 20 people on board.
