[edit]Description20150704 - 019 - Tobermory, Ont. - Wreck of the "Sweepstakes" (view through glass-bottom boat).jpg |
English: The wreck of the Sweepstakes, as seen in July 2015 through the glass-bottomed hull of the Tobermory Frontier at Big Tub Harbour in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada. Built in 1867, this 119-foot, two-mast schooner is (along with the passenger steamer City of Grand Rapids) one of the two shallow-water wrecks that serve as Big Tub's marquee visitor attractions. The Sweepstakes was carrying a load of coal when it was severely damaged off nearby Cove Island in August 1885; it sunk while being towed to Tobermory the following month. The ship remains in extraordinarily good condition and is clearly visible under only about 20 feet of water, thus - in addition to its aforementioned status as a popular point of interest on the itineraries of the Tobermory Frontier and other tour boats that ply the Big Tub-Flowerpot Island route - it's also easily accessible to wreck divers. |
