South Dakota Grasslands Planner ~ January

FREE! Download, print and enjoy!

Managing Water on Grasslands Mother Nature is in charge of annual precipitation. Your capturing and keeping the billions fo gallons of water that falls on your property every year starts with understanding your soil and having a plan.

Improving soil structure and increasing infiltration (the ability for soil to absorb water) takes time, but is achieveable. Good resource management earlier in the year -- the spring into summer months -- pays off in the drier months later in the year. "There are years with above and below normal precipitation, we can't control that; we can only prepare," says rancher Lyle Perman, Walworth County, SD.

He uses watershed and precipitation data to hep find th "sweet spot" for harvesting grass while keeping the soil healthy. "Stressing and over-utlizing the grass you have can impact grass production for two or three years down the road. When timely moisture doesn't come your way, don't waste time deciding what to do. Have a plan."
